Artist:

Wendy Burchell

Artist's statement and description:I was drawn to the frailty and daintiness of Gladiolus carinatus ( both the blue and pink varieties) but as I studied them, I became absorbed in the 'insect guide' veins in the petals, stamens and pistil . I drew them larger than life so as to portray the details which are so often lost to the naked eye.

Veltheimia bracteata provided me with a challenge in achieving the shiny, undulating leaves and turquoise, pink and cream colours in the many florets. The green bulb was unique and interesting to paint especially as such a robust plant came from the relatively small bulb.
